A/c blows hot air, coolant level isn't a problem, 2006

Customer Question

a/c blows hot air
JA: Have you checked the coolant level? Have you checked the hoses for leaks?
Customer: coolant level isn't a problem
JA: What is the model/year of your Chevy?
Customer: 2006 impala ltz 3.9 liter
JA: Are you fixing your Impala yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: I have a mechanic who is telling me it needs $1,300 in repairs. He connected it to his machine and the pressure gauge was jumping around and the compressor started making a strange sound.
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: He also suggested it might have an expansion valve clog.

Seems like a lot to replace a compressor and expansion valve. Was this quoted at the dealer?

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
This was a local mechanic. Do you have to replace the compressor in order to replace the expansion valve?
Customer: replied 2 months ago.
The system was working fine. One day it is not. Everything comes on, the compressor is turning, the fans are blowing, no cold air.
Customer: replied 2 months ago.
There was plenty of coolant in the system. When the mechanic put the car on his system, the compressor started making a wierd noise and the pressure gauge was bouncing around. I believe he pulled the coolant out and then could not get it back in.
Customer: replied 2 months ago.
You still with me?
Expert:  Dan replied 2 months ago.

The expansion valve is not on the compressor it is close to the evaporator.

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
Could this problem be just an expansion valve issue? If so, how much should that run?
Expert:  Dan replied 2 months ago.

If the valve is stuck it could be starving the compressor for oil, this would damage the compressor.

Expert:  Dan replied 2 months ago.

I am not sure what the cost to replace it would be, it depends on the cost of the parts and the labor.

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
If the valve was blocked, would that stop the flow of coolant?
Expert:  Dan replied 2 months ago.

Yes.

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
does replacing that valve require replacing anything else?
Customer: replied 2 months ago.
the mechanic says the low side was running 60-80 psi.
Expert:  Dan replied 2 months ago.

what about the high side?

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
Didn't say.

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
He was thinking it was 200
Expert:  Dan replied 2 months ago.

That sounds about right.

Expert:  Dan replied 2 months ago.

Here is a pic of the expansion valve.

Expert:  Dan replied 2 months ago.

Are you looking to do the repairs yourself? I can send you the repair procedures for the expansion valve and the compressor if you would like.

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
How do I know that the compressor is bad?
Expert:  Dan replied 2 months ago.

It should not make any noise. You could start with the expansion valve and go from there.

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
It doesn't make any noise unless it is hooked up to the mechanics a/c machine and then it is a low clickity sound I have never heard before. Guess that is what I'll do. Valve first and see.
Expert:  Dan replied 2 months ago.

Sounds like a good plan. Let me know how it goes.
