JA: How old is your oil pump? Has the check engine light come on?
Customer: Just bought car..not sure bout oil pump age but its undergone a full resto wi/in last 6-8 yrs.Car runs great, pressure holds stable,no engine light. just not sure what to expect given the custom build. FYI it run off 2 4 barrel carter afb
JA: Are you fixing your Camaro yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: no its already been fully restored. Engine built by professional motor builder..the one who also builds grave digger engines

Hi there,

I would say your pressure is ok, considering what is done to the engine.

What is the hot idle oil pressure, lbs at rpm, ie: 10 psi at 1000rpm.

When the max oil pressure occur at 45 psi at 2500 rpm? Or higher speed?

620hp sounds like fun.

the tack may not be accurate. when off needle sits at 1000. when up to 3000 pressure goes to 55 when just pressing on gas.Car not in gear when I check right now,but when i drive car runs 45-55 at about 60-70mph..do readings matter if car is in gear and driving versus when just checking when car idles? and what should redline be?

An old, but still very good rule of thumb for oil pressure is 10 psi per 1000 rpm is enough.

This is a Chevy rule as well.

Oil flow is more important than oil pressure.

We could have tighter bearing clearances and have 90-100 psi, then we have overheated bearings and more drag through the engine trying to operate a pump at that pressure.

The readings won't matter whether you are in gear or not, 3000 rpm in neutral should be the same as 3000 rpm driving, as long as the oil temp is the same in both cases.

Redline? What rpm does it produce the 620hp at?

Let's say 6000, I would have a rev limiter of 6200 to be safe.
