While driving, my oils pressure drops to 0 and the warning

Customer Question

While driving, my oils pressure drops to 0 and the warning alarm sounds. I pulled over , stopped the engine and checked the oil level and it was good. I started the engine up and pressure was good until I drove another few minutes and then it happened again.
JA: How old is your oil pump? Has the check engine light come on?
Customer: Not sure how old the pump is, I just bought the vehicle last week used. The check engine light is on.
JA: What is the model/year of your Chevy?
Customer: 2007 tahoe
JA: Are you hoping to fix this yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: I'm just trying to figure out what might be going on. I plan on taking to a shop. Don't now whether I should drive it or have it towed.
JA: Anything else you think the mechanic should know?
Customer: Nothing I can think of.

The first thing you need to do is have the oil pressure checked with a gauge to verify what it really is. If it tests good, then you have a bad oil pressure sending unit/sensor.

If it tests bad, you need an oil pump and also check for sludge in the engine starting with inside the valve covers.

Take off the oil fill cap and look under it to see if there is sludge in it. I don't advise driving it if there is a pressure issue.

Thanks, Ron
