Are there any of the 4wd lights blinking or are there any messages on the dash saying service 4wd system?

there are no lights blinking

Most likely if there are no lights blinking or display on the dash then the electrical shifting system is working properly. The problem is most likely inside the transfer case. The synchronizer that shift it into 4wd has failed and the transfer case will either need rebuilt or a remanufactured unit installed.
