Customer Question

I have a gm key fob from a different vehicle and was wanting to know if I could reprogram it for a 2009 Chevy Silverado and if so how do I do it
JA: Have you checked the battery in the fob? Will the car open with another remote?
Customer: The Silverado did not come with a key fob so i was wanting to reuse an old one i have
JA: What is the model of your '09 Chevy?
Customer: 2009 Chevy Silverado
JA: Are you hoping to fix this yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: yes i was hoping too, i have turned the key on but didn't start the truck and put the truck in the program remote setting and held down the lock and unlock buttons on the key fob but it didn't work
JA: Anything else you think the mechanic should know?
Customer: no
JA: OK. Got it. I'm sending you to a secure page on JustAnswer so you can place the $5 fully-refundable deposit now. While you're filling out that form, I'll tell the Chevy Mechanic about your situation and then connect you two.

Hi there,

It is unlikely that any other key fob could be programmed to your vehicle.

A GM dealer is the best way.

Any other form of programming may not work correctly and leave you locked out.

Then you would need to tow it to a dealer to fix.
