Customer Question

Have a Chevy Silverado 2004 model which every so often just cuts out (loses all power both elec and engine) without notice which makes for a few exciting moments. Will usually restart after turning over a couple of times. Occurs under varying conditions and with varying frequency. Local mechanic has no idea so becoming desperate so will appreciate any suggestions on a fix.

what engine is in your truck?
Expert:  CHRIS ZAPANTIS replied 8 months ago.
also let me know if you are near the truck.

Hi Chris,
I am near the truck but not a mechanic. The engine type is an 8 cylinder turbo diesel, Chevrolet RFB C/K series 1996. Hope that helps.

you have a fuse/relay box on the drivers side fender area?
Expert:  CHRIS ZAPANTIS replied 8 months ago.
We dont have that engine package in the states but most of the time I have seen this happen to Chevy SUV its because the fuse box or wiring harness going to it is bad.
Expert:  CHRIS ZAPANTIS replied 8 months ago.
they usually go bad where the connectors meet the box.
Expert:  CHRIS ZAPANTIS replied 8 months ago.
Tell your mechanic to look there. That is really the only place everything meets besides the power or ground wire from the battery.
Customer: replied 8 months ago.
Bearing in mind the vehicle has been converted for right hand drive, there is a Fuse Relay centre on the passenger side fender.
Expert:  CHRIS ZAPANTIS replied 8 months ago.
ide start the truck and hit the box or jiggle the wires under it see if it loses power
Customer: replied 8 months ago.
Started it and have banged the box numerous times as well as wiggled all wires going into/out of the box and no result. I know the mechanic has also tried to get it to cut out by fiddling with every wire he could find. Is it possible that the PDF (?) unit has anything to do with it - my son suggested I ask?
Expert:  CHRIS ZAPANTIS replied 8 months ago.
What is a pdf?
Customer: replied 8 months ago.
I looked it up and I think it is a Particulate Deseil Filter.
Expert:  CHRIS ZAPANTIS replied 8 months ago.
oh its diesel
Expert:  CHRIS ZAPANTIS replied 8 months ago.
that may cause running problems but not losing all electric
Customer: replied 8 months ago.
thought I indicated that with the engine model even though I now see I have been spelling it incorrectly - sorry.
Expert:  CHRIS ZAPANTIS replied 8 months ago.
actually my bad i didnt see diesel
Expert:  CHRIS ZAPANTIS replied 8 months ago.
give me a couple minutes im looking something up
Customer: replied 8 months ago.
No problem, I need to check my spelling
Expert:  CHRIS ZAPANTIS replied 8 months ago.
That truck didnt come in diesel here in the states. I tried to look up repair history for such problems but nothing like that came up. I went to the 2500 that did come with that motor and still nothing similar.
Customer: replied 8 months ago.
what can you suggest because I have no idea - vehicle is currently booked with an auto electrician in the next town, 187 kilometres away on Monday in the hope he may find something but cost and time are rapidly becoming a problem.
Expert:  CHRIS ZAPANTIS replied 8 months ago.
I am an auto electrician but its hard for me to suggest anything without checking it myself. All I can do is opt out and see maybe someone else has seen it before. My gut feeling is that its coming from your fuse box
Expert:  CHRIS ZAPANTIS replied 8 months ago.
Are you ok with me opting out?
Customer: replied 8 months ago.
If you opt out, does the query go out to other people who may have a solution?
Expert:  CHRIS ZAPANTIS replied 8 months ago.
Customer: replied 8 months ago.
In that case, thanks for your time.Regards

Did the problem start after any work was end, an accident, etc
