The forward sprag is failing in your car. It will need to be rebuilt to access it, your mechanic will likely find the sprag in pieces when he takes it apart. The sprag is grabbing when it feels like it, that's why it's intermittent, and shifting to manual 1st cycles the clutch that engages this sprag, so that's why moving the shifter makes the sprag grab again.

It's overhaul time for your transmission. Get this done sooner than later, as the pieces that are coming off that sprag clutch will destroy other parts of your transmission if you continue to drive it, and eventually the car won't move at all.
