I have a 2006 Chevy impala 5.3 liter and it won't crank

Customer Question

I have a 2006 Chevy impala 5.3 liter and it won't crank but if I jump the starter it starts and stays running. I don't have no codes. So I looked at data & my PNP switch & it says gear when in park.

Is this a key-less start system?

How can I tell
Expert:  Juan Crespo replied 8 months ago.

If you normally start the engine without a key, then it's a key-less system. Otherwise it's the regular system.

This system doesn't have a traditional PRND switch. Instead, it uses a transmission internal mode switch that transmits logic signals to the BCM through the serial data bus. To test it, you'll need a scan tool capable of displaying IMS values.

No keyless

OK. Then we can start our diagnosis:

First, plug in scan tool and turn ignition on. Select IMS on the scan tool. Move the lever to each transmission range: P, R,N, D4, D3, D2 and D1. Does each range selected match the scan tool IMS display? If not, what does it display?
