Customer Question

I'm ***** *****. I just replaced the steering wheel in my 1999 silverado and the air bag light wont go off. Can I fix this at home?
JA: Thanks. Can you give me any more details about your issue?
Customer: Air bag light worked fine until I replaced the steering wheel. The wheel was cut to remove a club when they stole it
JA: OK got it. Last thing — Chevy Mechanics generally expect a deposit of about $18 to help with your type of question (you only pay if satisfied). Now I'm going to take you to a page to place a secure deposit with JustAnswer. Don't worry, this chat is saved. After that, we will finish helping you.

Hello. Welcome to the site. Thanks for coming. I'm ***** *****.
I'm here to provide as much information and insight as I can, to best answer your question.

Did you recheck to make sure the air bag was plugged in correctly?

Did you use the same air bag or one that came with the steering wheel?

Did you have the battery disconnected when you removed the air bag?

You will need to get the Air Bag system scanned for codes to see what codes are in the system. Try to clear them and see if it comes back. You can check with your local parts stores like AutoZone to see if they can check the Air Bag codes and clear them.

When you have a code it will be easier to diagnose.

I unhooked the battery the night before I removed the steering wheel.
Expert:  Daniel Jones replied 1 year ago.

The easiest way to try and diagnose this is by getting the system scanned for codes before you can go any further.
