I meant my 03 tahoe shut off while i was driving near the end of a 300 mile trip pulling a trailer. the lights stayed on and i wasn't able to shut them off. After about 20 minutes it started back up, then shut back off.

Hi, MyName is***** have over 20 years experience repairing vehicles. I am a ASE Certified Master Auto Technician. I am confident we can resolve your problem together. Please remember I don't know your skill level. I can't see, smell, hear, or touch the vehicle. It may take a few back and forth replies to get to a satisfactory resolution.I also try to give all of the information you may need expecting a positive rating. If there is any reason I cannot get a positive rating please let me know.

Just for clarification: Your vehicle shut off at the end of a trip and the lights stayed on and wouldn't go off. now it wont start?

1. Are the lights still on?

2. When you turn the key you have nothing or will it crank?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
The lights stay on fire about 20 minutes. When i turn the key i have nothing. I had it towed home and i had to jump it. It ran for about 1 minute then shut off. Back to square 1.
Expert:  Tool Hut replied 1 year ago.

Do the lights on dash come on?

Will the engine crank?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
The dash lights also stay on. And no.
Expert:  Tool Hut replied 1 year ago.

Do you have a test light?

Can you check IGNA fuse under the hood? it should be a 40amp.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Looking for it now
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Also, when i was driving before it shut off, the lights were flickering. All lights, and they also fluttered when i signaled.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Fuse is good. My skill level is high.
Expert:  Tool Hut replied 1 year ago.

Can you jump it again and see whet the voltage is when running? Your symptoms indicate an alternator not working.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I always had problems with checking voltage. What do i use?
Expert:  Tool Hut replied 1 year ago.

Either a volt meter or the gauge on dash

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
The battery gauge says a lil over 14
Expert:  Tool Hut replied 1 year ago.

Have you disconnected the car you were jumping it with?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Used a jump box. I touched the gas and it shut off
Expert:  Tool Hut replied 1 year ago.

Do you have a battery charger? I would suggest charging the battery before we continue. You may just have a bad battery and the alternator just cant keep up.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
It's re started, and running smoothly. Three minutes and it shut off. There is a clickibg noise after it shuts off. Its in the front of the engine near the air filter connection. The battery is new
Expert:  Tool Hut replied 1 year ago.

That is the throttle body and the click would be normal when it shuts off. Do you have reduced power message on the dash?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
No. It keeps cranking, but it shutsoff after 30 secs
Expert:  Tool Hut replied 1 year ago.

Can you verify if you are getting fuel pressure and spark?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I have pressure tester, but how do i do spark. I need a minute to get the tester
Expert:  Tool Hut replied 1 year ago.

If you pull off a plug wire and insert a old spark plug or spark tester would be easiest way to check for spark

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
But why would the lights stay on so long
Expert:  Tool Hut replied 1 year ago.

Lets determine no start first. Once you get to start we will see why lights stay on. We may find cause while determining no start

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Can't test pressure because it won't stay on. Now it wont do anything. Back to square one. Why doesnt the starter even turn? When iturn the key, nothing happens at all
Expert:  Tool Hut replied 1 year ago.

OK. You stated earlier it cranked for 30 seconds.

Do you have a security light on?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Okay, lets start over. While i was driving the lights would flicker from time to time.It shut off while i was driving. The lights stayed on (interior and exterior). After about 20 mins it would start but only stay on for about two minutes. After waiting for awhile, and jumping it, it would start but run for a shorter time. My abs light came on when it first happened. I have been sitting here for the ladt few minutes texting you when i here a click inside like its on somekind of time out. Again, it will run fo a few secs then shutoff. I need to get this resolved, as this is my only vehicle and i am a contractor. Frustrated
Expert:  Tool Hut replied 1 year ago.

OK. So what are the current symptoms?

Will it crank?

Will it start?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Ok after it sits, it will crank, start but shut off
Expert:  Tool Hut replied 1 year ago.

When it wont crank do you have a security light on?

Expert:  Tool Hut replied 1 year ago.

Does the starter crank the engine and it just wont start or no click or nothing?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
The normal dash lights be on. No click or nothing
Expert:  Tool Hut replied 1 year ago.

Do you have a test light? Can you check power to starter relay?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
what to do?
Expert:  Tool Hut replied 1 year ago.

If you pull starter relay out you should have power at 2 of the terminals when you have ignition switch to start

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Have power
Expert:  Tool Hut replied 1 year ago.

at both? can you jump 30 and 87 and see if it cranks?

Expert:  Tool Hut replied 1 year ago.

next check the crank fuse for power when you have in crank position

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
It started
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
But shut off
Expert:  Tool Hut replied 1 year ago.

OK. Did you check crank fuse for power when in crank position?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Where
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Found it
Expert:  Tool Hut replied 1 year ago.

Underhood fuse box?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Turn the key and ckeck
Expert:  Tool Hut replied 1 year ago.

OK. Now we need to go back to relay. Check for ground at 1 of the terminals when put to crank position.

Expert:  Tool Hut replied 1 year ago.

make sure it is only grounded when in crank

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
How
Expert:  Tool Hut replied 1 year ago.

put test light to positive of battery and put on relay terminal

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Take the relay out
Expert:  Tool Hut replied 1 year ago.

Yes

Expert:  Tool Hut replied 1 year ago.

It is not cranking now correct?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Grounded at87
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
The light came on at 87
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Doing nothing
Expert:  Tool Hut replied 1 year ago.

No it should be 85

Expert:  Tool Hut replied 1 year ago.

30 and 86 should be 12 volts in crank position

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Ineed aminute i have to find a meter
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Will a multimeter do
Expert:  Tool Hut replied 1 year ago.

The PCM is supposed to provide the ground. It is very possible you have PCM causing your problems with the no start.

My concern is there is no common link to the lights in the PCM. So you either have 2 problems or you have 2 wires that have melted somewhere to ground

Expert:  Tool Hut replied 1 year ago.

yes multi meter should work fine

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Need a min
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Can't find the meter. But what wires should i be looking for
Expert:  Tool Hut replied 1 year ago.

the test light should work fine. Check 30 and 86 for positive by hooking lead of test light to ground. 85 should be ground hook lead to positive

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
85 and 30 show power
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
In crank position
Expert:  Tool Hut replied 1 year ago.

OK. ground should be 86 then

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
No when o hook the light to + 87 lights up
Expert:  Tool Hut replied 1 year ago.

OK. The PCM is not providing ground.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Where is it
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
How do i fix it?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Could it just go like that? Is that something i could do myself? I also do mechanic work, but some of the electrical stuff is confusing.
Expert:  Tool Hut replied 1 year ago.

It is under hood silver box. Will likely need to replaced. The replacement will need to be programmed.

Need to determine that it is not a wirING problem. I would suggest hooking up a scanner and monitoring scan Data for starter inhibit

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
What kind of scanner OBD
Expert:  Tool Hut replied 1 year ago.

The pcm's vary in price. A professional scanner will be required for starter inhibit data

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Off to the dealer. Smh thanks for trying
Expert:  Tool Hut replied 1 year ago.

A lot of shops do programming. I would check with a local shop and see if they can assist

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
But is it the pcm for sure, and what wires should i check for bad ground. And can i install the pcm then drive it to have it programmed.
Expert:  Tool Hut replied 1 year ago.

Needs to be programmed to start. Not pcm for sure just likely. I cannot say for sure since you don't have professional scanner that can monitor starter inhibit
