Hello,
A diode in the alternator has failed and is causing the light to come on. Now here is the problem.
It can still be charging the battery and if the alternator is bench tested at a parts store it will show up as good. Thats because it wont pick up the bad diode when its still charging but when 1 more diode goes out it wont be able to charge at all.
Replace the alternator with a quality unit and be done with it.
