I think I have a front axle going bad. At highway speeds when decelerating , I have a bad vibration in the front and earlier, when I tool off it sounded as though gears weren't catching.

most of the time the vacuum ball switch on the transfer case will go bad and be stuck partially on causing this kind of issue
under the battery if you remove and plug off the vacuum line for the actuator that the cable goes into for the front axle and drive it will the noise go away ?
