im sorry your having this problem

this kind of problem is usually caused from low fuel pressure a possible plugged cat convertor and sometimes the MAF sensor

did this problem happen out of the blue one day ?

are there any codes in the computer?

do you have any access to a fuel pressure gauge ?

Hi Gary it happened yesterday pulled into the gas station got gas

started the truck put it in drive went about 3 feet

and it died ,it will start but it takes a little time ,

but step on the gas it dies,I don't have a pressure gage

 

PO108 was a code that came up

90% of these issues are fuel pump failures

since it just did this out of the blue we can rule out the plugged cat convertor

unplug the MAF connector and see if it will run for you

if it does the MAF sensor or the connector to it is bad if it still does this the odds are the fuel pump has failed ( usually happens after I fuel fill it seems I don't know why but it does )

confirming this with a fuel pressure gauge is the next step if the MAF unplug doesn't work

Hans if the fuel pump is bad the fuel tank will need to be removed to change it and also make sure you install a new fuel filter !

the 108 is a MAP code and usually its set with an engine running bad any dying out

a scan tool would need be connected to diagnose that code but I think that code is set from it stalling

I can hear the pump come on until it builds pressure

ok at this point it has to have low fuel pressure

its more than likely going to need a fuel pump but you need confirm fuel pressure with a test gauge 56 - 62 PSI key ON engine OFF

if its below that spec it needs a fuel pump

Hans I would hate to guess without knowing the PSI of the fuel pressure

but if it will not run with the MAF unplugged and since it happened out of the blue I doubt its the cat convertor it would more than likely be low fuel pressure which the fuel pump would need to be changed

I also broke one of the ear's off the disrtributor that holds the cap down


I don't know if that would cause it ,or could I have hooked up the fuel lines wrong

it seems take longer to get it to start ,it hesitates and may or not die when I step on the gas ,sputters ,some back firering ,and left to idol, it

there is a test port to screw the pressure gaueg on the fuel line near the drivers side distibuter area
should have a black plastic cap on it almost like a tire valve

Ok I found it


but I don't have a tester


so I guess I'll have to go get one


 


the little ear that holds the distributor cap to the distributor ,not the ear on the cap.


how can I fix that ??

they sell a fix kit as some auto parts stores or swap out a re manufactured complete distributer to fix it

well I put the tester on the the fuel line


we have 20 psi at an idel ,,,,,,whats up with that??

wow thats way too low
what does it read key ON engine off and will the needle hold on the guage ?
if its @ 20 can you unplug the connector at the fuel tank top into the fuel pump and when cranking does the grey wire terminal in the connector show 12 volts
put your meter to DC red lead into the gray wire and the black lead to the black wire when cranking does it show 12 volts ?

if you show 12 volts with a meter testing like i said the pump is a problem
did you replace the complete fuel module in the tank ? or just the pump ?

just being sure some late models had complete module assemblies
make sure the connection on the underside of the fuel sender is not burnt at all or any of the terminals or that connector are not burnt or melted
looking from under it where the pump wires connect to the bottom of that just disconnect it and make sure the connector is not melted at all or any burnt terminals
if that looks good they did not give you the correct fuel pump for this truck

when I got the pump the first time it was for a 1996 ,


it did not work, the old pump was from a 1995 ,


so I thought someone may have swaped tanks


then it would have to be a bad pump I guess??

the one for the 1996 did it look the same ?
the one for a 1995 is the wrong pump in 1995 they ran throttle body injection and your 1996 has a fuel injection unit under the upper intake
the 1995 TBI used alot lower fuel pressure as for the 1995 with the injection unit used close to 60 psi

no they did not look the same


they were slighty diffrent ,but 1996 would not fit in the holder


thats why I had to go back and exchange ,so am I pulling tank agin?

to change the pump you will have too
if this engine in your truck has the injection unit under the intake maniold
this has to have the 1996 pump out in it as a 1995 will not make the pressure it needs

It was the map sensor ,old fuel pump is good
