Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD: I have a 2001 Chevy Silverado

This answer was rated:

I have a 2001 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD,XXXXX automatic, 8.1 Engine with 78000 miles on it. The ABS light and the brake light come on at the same time. They don't stay on all the time though. They come on every few days and stay on for a day or two then go out. Any idea what the problem is and how to fix it?
Hi, glad to be of help. The first things to check without a scanner is the fluid level in master cylinder reservoir. If the fluid level gets too low, the brake & ABS light will come on. A low fluid level indicates your brake pads are worn or you have a leak. You may just need new brake pads. Have your brakes checked. This is the most common reason for ABS & brake light to come on and go off. A malfunctioning master cylinder reservoir level sensor can also cause this. Check by disconnecting level sensor. Another thing you can check is low or bad battery or alternator output. If voltage gets too low, this will also turn on the ABS & brake light. Also check to make sure the middle rear brake light is working. If the bulb or socket has a malfunction, or bulb is burned out this will also turn on the ABS & brake light. Also check parking brake switch. Other than these, you will need a scanner with ABS function to diagnose problem and retrieve codes.
