Chevy Venture: headlights..my 04..are very dim..wiring diagram

Resolved Question:

The headlights on my 04 Chevy Venture are very dim like there is not enough power to them. Also the switch doesn't affect anything. I have the wiring diagram and thought there might be a daytime mode it is stuck in but didn't find it. What should I do.

GM Tech (Cam) :

Hello, I'm Cam. Please include all the details about your issue so I can accurately advise you. I cannot see your vehicle so please be detailed.

GM Tech (Cam) :

For all the headlights to be affected you need to look at the whole power source,, and in this case it is the power supplied by the HEADLAMP Circuit Breaker in the dash fuse block.

GM Tech (Cam) :

So can you first test that?

GM Tech (Cam) :

See if there is full power to the circuit breaker or if there is a loose/damaged/overheated terminal there.

Sounds good.
Customer: replied 4 years ago.
Sorry I haven't gotten back to you sooner. I do have 12+ volts at the dash circuit breaker.
Expert:  GM Tech (Cam) replied 4 years ago.
Can you test there with a testligt to see if the light is bright?
Customer: replied 4 years ago.
As soon as it stops raining. Shouldn't be to long.
Expert:  GM Tech (Cam) replied 4 years ago.
Ok.
Customer: replied 4 years ago.
The test light is bright.
Expert:  GM Tech (Cam) replied 4 years ago.
Is it dim on the flash to pass setting?
Customer: replied 4 years ago.
With the high beams on, the flash to pass makes it brighter.
Expert:  GM Tech (Cam) replied 4 years ago.
Still dimmer than normal or full brights?
Customer: replied 4 years ago.
Don't know, this car has never had full brights. I bought it in 09
Expert:  GM Tech (Cam) replied 4 years ago.
How about the daytime running lights, do they work well?
Customer: replied 4 years ago.
Yes
Expert:  GM Tech (Cam) replied 4 years ago.
I would look at the dimmer switch then, the contacts in there are likely faulty.
Customer: replied 4 years ago.
How do I get to the dimmer switch?
Expert:  GM Tech (Cam) replied 4 years ago.
It is in the steering column so you can remove the trim and test, and repalce if needed. The test can be this, see if the yellow gets fill power, if not then the headlamp switch. if it dows then jump the yellow to the tan and light green one at a time and see if the lights come on bright.

Do I like the answer? Read it yourself and see if it makes sense.
Expert:  GM Tech (Cam) replied 4 years ago.
LOL, sorry, Its been a long couple weeks.
The trim is the steering column trim,.
The yellow having full power means a bright test light, both of them, yellow wires that is.
If they do, then jump the wires as I indicated and note the headlight reaction.
Customer: replied 4 years ago.
Thanks. I took 2 screws out of the bottom of the trim & it doesn't move much, do I need to pull the steering wheel or what?
Expert:  GM Tech (Cam) replied 4 years ago.
The bottom will come off, and the tilt lever needs to come out. It does pivot at the dash end a bit.

Customer: replied 4 years ago.
I'll go try all of what you have recommended. Thanks
Expert:  GM Tech (Cam) replied 4 years ago.
Let me know what you find.
Customer: replied 4 years ago.
OK
Customer: replied 4 years ago.
I won't get to it until this afternoon, but how do I get the tilt lever out?
Expert:  GM Tech (Cam) replied 4 years ago.
It should pull straight out if it does not thread in.
Customer: replied 4 years ago.
neither wire makes the lights brighter.
Expert:  GM Tech (Cam) replied 4 years ago.
but there is full power there? Can you jump from the battery to those 2 wires and see what the lights do?
Customer: replied 4 years ago.
I left the key on - killed the batt- tomorrow?
Expert:  GM Tech (Cam) replied 4 years ago.
Sure thing.
Customer: replied 4 years ago.
Hello again. The yellow wire doesn't have any power.
Expert:  GM Tech (Cam) replied 4 years ago.
You did have the headlight switch on?
Customer: replied 4 years ago.
Yes, and the engine running.
Expert:  GM Tech (Cam) replied 4 years ago.
And if you use your own jumper wire from battery power, could you get the headlights to come on?
Customer: replied 4 years ago.
No. Batt to lt grn = nothing. Batt to tan = smoke!
Expert:  GM Tech (Cam) replied 4 years ago.
Are you at the back of the dimmer switch or thei ignition switch?
Customer: replied 4 years ago.
Below the dimmer switch.
Customer: replied 4 years ago.
Below the dimmer switch. on the wires coming from the ignition switch.
Expert:  GM Tech (Cam) replied 4 years ago.
These tests are to be done at the dimmer switch not the igntion switch.
Customer: replied 4 years ago.
OK thanks. tomorow
Customer: replied 4 years ago.
I can see that bundle of wires but can't reach it.
