Resolved Question:

2002 impala cranks but wont start
Submitted: 5 years ago.

GM Tech (Cam) :

Hello, I'm Cam. Please include all the details about your issue so I can accurately advise you. I cannot see your vehicle so please be detailed.

GM Tech (Cam) :

Does it start for a moment if you put some fuel in the throttle body?

Customer:

I put a fuel gauge at the fuel rail and I have 50-55 psi while cranking

Customer:

i have not tried to spray staring fluid yet

GM Tech (Cam) :

Is there spark at the plugs then?

Customer:

i checked for spark with my inline spark test tool and i do have spark coming from each of the three coil packs

Customer:

it kinda sputters but never starts

Customer:

my dad replaced the crankshaft sensor behind the harmonic balancer

Customer:

i have a code reader but there are no codes

GM Tech (Cam) :

did you try spraying something in the air filter or throttle? carb cleaner or ethere?

Customer:

he just went to get some

Customer:

This all started last sunday

GM Tech (Cam) :

ok this will tell us if this is fuel or spark (spark timing)

Customer:

the car ran fine he parked it in the garage and the next day no start

Customer:

ok

GM Tech (Cam) :

lets see what happens with the starter fluid.

Customer:

ok

GM Tech (Cam) :

thanks

Customer:

hello

Customer:

i tried spraying starting fluid in

GM Tech (Cam) :

ok

Customer:

the engine seems to try to run on ether but still not starting

GM Tech (Cam) :

so it ran on fluid but not on its own?

Customer:

not very well

GM Tech (Cam) :

OK so that confirms this is a fuel issue.

GM Tech (Cam) :

did the pressure hold when you turned the key off?

Customer:

yes

GM Tech (Cam) :

OK so we are looking at an injector issue.

GM Tech (Cam) :

IS there power to the pink wire on any of the injectors with the key on/.

Customer:

i will check

Customer:

am i looking for 12v?

GM Tech (Cam) :

yes

Customer:

ok i have 12v at the pink wire

GM Tech (Cam) :

OK can you get a noid light? it plugs in place of the injectors and will flash to indicate if the proper signal is being sent for the injectors

Customer:

i do not have one right now

GM Tech (Cam) :

can you get one? The kit is often cheap, 15-20 for one .

Customer:

what would cause a signal problem to the injectors?

GM Tech (Cam) :

the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is in control of the injectors so it may be bad, wiring to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) from the injectors.

Customer:

yes i can can try to get one

Customer:

how long do i get to chat with you?

GM Tech (Cam) :

as long as needed.

GM Tech (Cam) :

However it may be easier if you need to go for a time to change the format, but you can save the link as a favorite and come back at any time.

Customer:

ok

GM Tech (Cam) :

How long do you expect it will take?

Customer:

do you think a local auto parts place would have a noid kit?

Customer:

there is a place about 10 min from me

GM Tech (Cam) :

they should, and just leave the page open for that time then.

Customer:

Have to stop for an hour, sorry, see you on the other side.

GM Tech (Cam) :

Ok.

Customer:

I am back with new noid tester in hand, Free rental with $60.00 deposit at local O'Reilly Auto Parts. Will I be checking for a short in the wiring?

GM Tech (Cam) :

Stick it in place of each injector and crank to see if it flashes on each injector plug.

Customer:

GM choices in test kit are...TBT, PFI, SCPI.

GM Tech (Cam) :

pfi

GM Tech (Cam) :

just find one that you can slide into the connetor.

Customer:

Ok pfi Will now do that

GM Tech (Cam) :

ok

Customer:

Having trouble locating connector. Do you mean at the individual invector or some connecting block of wires?

Customer:

Kit calls it a harness connector.

GM Tech (Cam) :

the individual connnectors to each injector.

GM Tech (Cam) :

They call it many things, but this light plugs into the connector for each injector.

Customer:

ok

Customer:

retry

GM Tech (Cam) :

ok

Customer:

I got a flashing light at on einjector. Do I have to test them all?

Customer:

I was reading about "shorts" in the injector wireing can cause all the injectors to fail. Is that right?

GM Tech (Cam) :

PLease yes.

GM Tech (Cam) :

Itt can, but if they are flashing that means it is not .

Customer:

ok will test the rest.

GM Tech (Cam) :

ok

Customer:

All injectors cause noid light to flash, strong light.

GM Tech (Cam) :

Ok so then we need to look at the injector flow. We know it is opening the injector, and it is getting spark, so did you get fuel before this?

Customer:

Car still tries to start to the point it causes the starter to dissengage.

Customer:

Still getting fuel pressure, half a tank.

Customer:

Bad gas??!?

GM Tech (Cam) :

that is my thought, yes .

Customer:

Why won't it run on a steady stream of eather?

GM Tech (Cam) :

it may be flooding.

GM Tech (Cam) :

can you try unplugging the Mass Air Flow sensor (MAF) sensor and see what happens?

Customer:

So fuel regulator trouble in the computer?

Customer:

OK will look for MAF, just hab the MAP replaced.

GM Tech (Cam) :

possibly in the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), but that is bottom of the list.

Customer:

Is MAF on top of air intake housing?

GM Tech (Cam) :

yes

GM Tech (Cam) :

three wire sensor

Customer:

ok will go check now.

GM Tech (Cam) :

ok

Customer:

Also have to put invectors back on.

GM Tech (Cam) :

ok

Customer:

EUREKA IT RUNS!

GM Tech (Cam) :

PErhaps a bad connection. Did you try it a few times?

Customer:

Sould I clean it or replace it? MAF

GM Tech (Cam) :

Oh you removed the Mass Air Flow sensor (MAF) and it ran? Replace it.

Customer:

will try a few more times, but it starts and runs while MAF is disconnected.

GM Tech (Cam) :

That is basically it,

Customer:

yes I disconnecterd it and it starts and runs without it.

GM Tech (Cam) :

It is expensive.

Customer:

Saw a video how to clean one What happens if I drive the car with maf disconnected?

GM Tech (Cam) :

You can drive with it off, the light will be on.

GM Tech (Cam) :

you can try to spray it out but usually no starting with it plugged in means the sensor is faulty.

Customer:

ok

Customer:

This seems to be the end. Car runs, many thanks!

GM Tech (Cam) :

Is there anything more I can get you today?

Customer:

No, you have helped a lot and we are greateful.
