93 chevy: K2500 5.7L tbi starts, idles..revving..surges..dies

Customer Question

My '93 chevy K2500 5.7L TBI starts, idles for a second and then shuts off like it is running out of fuel. If I try revving it after starting it runs terrible and surges for a few seconds and dies again. What might be the problem?

I would be suspecting the fuel pump but to be sure you would need to check the fuel pressure, its very common on this vehicle for the fuel pump to fail and cause this kind of problem. A fuel gauge would be needed to check the pressure and it needs to be connected in line with the fuel filter.

what pressure should it be running at?

It should be 9-13 psi at all times/ when cranking and started or with the key cycled on.
