1500 chevy: four wheel drive light flashes..engage..transfer case

This answer was rated:

I have a 97 1500 chevy z71.
The four wheel drive light flashes and does not engage.
I can hear the shift in the transfer case.
What should i do?

GM Tech (Cam) :

Hello, I'm Cam. Please include all the details about your issue so I can accurately advise you. I cannot see your vehicle so please be detailed.

GM Tech (Cam) :

Does the front axle actuator engage?

Customer:

I can only hear the transfer case engage.

Customer:

i do not hear anything in the front end

GM Tech (Cam) :

Ok, take out the front axle actuator and see if it extends.

Customer:

I am unable to working on the truck today. if the front actuator fail would this keep the light binking?

GM Tech (Cam) :

Yes, because the system is waiting for the front axle to engage, they are common for failing on these.

Customer:

It had been working early in the day. i son got the truck stuck in mud and had to be pulled out. After that the four wheel drive would not engage again. The front end was pulling when i was pulling him out of the mud.

GM Tech (Cam) :

Ok, so it is physically engaging but the light is flashing.

GM Tech (Cam) :

does this have the 2 wire actuator or the 4-5 wire actuator?

Customer:

not sure.

Customer:

Will it mess up anything by driveing the truck in this shape? I will need to get it the a shop for repairs.

GM Tech (Cam) :

No, it should not, but if you do hear or feel it grabbing, then you can drop the front drive shaft off to get it ther.

Customer:

Thanks
