If the distributor rotor is installed back in the correct position, there is no further adjustment. The distributor housing only bolts down in one position and there is no timing adjustment. Timing is controlled by the computer.

the engine is very hard to start. it will backfire thru the fuel housing. does the rotor have to be perfectly aligned with the cap on #1 plug wire. the engine will crank but it is hard to start. could i have a bad sensor. the check engine light is on.

The rotor does need to be aligned directly to #1 .

 

There are two marks on the balancer (1&4), make sure they are aligned as in the picture below.

The rotor in the distributor should be aligned directly with the pointer that is cast into the distributor housing. If the rotor is pointing opposite the pointer, turn the crankshaft one full revolution and recheck the alignment. If the rotor does not point directly to the pointer, pull the distributor out and reinstall so it is correct.
