my speedometer and tachometer both stopped working..tranny..shifting

Customer Question

I need to diagnose why my speedometer and tachometer both stopped working. In addition, my tranny is not shifting properly now. Is it my ECM or what? This is a 1997 Chevy Suburban

Thanks for visiting Just Answer,
This problem is often caused by a bad ignition switch.
Check the PRNDL fuse for power. If there is a loss of power to that fuse, check for voltage at the ignition switch White wire.
If no voltage there replace the ignition switch.

OK - I have already checked the PRNDL fuse and it is not blown. How do I check for voltage? I have a volt meter but it is for household use as far as I know - can I use it on my truck too?

Hey Tim -

I am planning on replacing the ignition switch and am having trouble figuring out how to get it removed. The online manuals I am looking at show diagrams that don't look like what I'm seeing on my truck's steering column. Do you have any better diagrams or can you tell me how to remove the ignition switch?
