Customer Question

2004 Chevy Avalanche radio wiring diagram. My truck does not have the yellow wire for accessory switch, does not have the brown wire for the radio illumination, and the harness does not have the grey dimmer wire in it. I do have an extra orange wire in the harness that is much smaller in diameter than the orange power wire.Couldn't get the new radio to power up. Anyone have any answers?

Optional Information:
Year : 2004
Make : Chevrolet
Make (other) : Avalanche

Already Tried:
Wired the new radio with all the sires that were in the harness and still short. Plus the wiring diagram shows a yellow wire for switched accessory. My harness does have that wire but does have a thin 20 gauge orange wire that I connected to the accessory pin. Still no good!Any suggestions would be appreciated. Big Dog

HelloCustomer Can you look in your glove box and let me know what U codes and Y codes are listed on the option tag. They will both be 3 digit codes. Let me know what you find and I'll send you to correct wiring diagrams.

Ian, the codes are as follows: UBO,UQ3,YD3,YD6,YE9,YMJ. Then at the very bottom of the list of codes is BC/CC U 817 K 690

Here are 3 diagrams for your truck. If you need anything after viewing them, don't hesitate to ask.

Ivan, I received the schematics, but still don't see what it is that I'm supposed to connect to. They must have several different wiring harness's in these trucks. I seen on the internet blogs it happens to be the most asked question by people on the Avalanche. The radios that came with the trucks don't hold up very well and that is why people are swapping them out. i have three Chevy trucks and seem to have the same problems with the radios in them. And wouldn't you know that all three trucks are wired differently! It's getting late, I'm going to give it a rest for a bit and look at it again in awhile to see if it looks any different to me.

Send me the wiring colors and labels for the new radio and I'll try to match things up for you and reply back. Did you buy an electrical install kit that plugs into the factory harness? That is usually the easiest way with the least amount of hassels.

From the radio is the following not including the speakers that were easy to figure out.

B+:Power annode (yellow)

ACC:Vehicle key (red)

GND:Ground wire (black)

R-IN: brake line ( Pink) used to shut dvd off while driving~ not really needed ?

ILL: illumination (orange)

Wires in the truck existing

B+ car battery ( orange 18 ga.)

Ground ( black 18 ga.)

Unknown ( orange 20 ga.)

Plus the speaker wires that were easy to figure out.

I thought maybe someone just used an orange wire as the switched acc. and used it to connect to the radio plug (red) I would almost have to scan this wiring diagram from the new radio and send it to you so that it would make more sense to you.

I think I understand, I'll get back to you in a little bit on what I think you should do.

Large orange wire from truck to yellow wire on radio

Black/white stripe to black ground on radio

That small orange on the truck is a data wire from the computer

The brake light in wire, is if you want the DVD to cancel when in motion. If you want it to play, leave that disconnected.

Also tell me what the description of the orange illumination wire for the radio is for, is it to dim the display, how do they tell you to connect it.

Let me know what happens and what you find.

Sorry for the delay in answering you. Thanks for the info on the small orange wire. Doesn't show up in any of the wiring diagrams. So if that is not the acc. wire then I assume I will have to run another wire from the key switch to the radio? Also It might appear that I need to run another wire from the dimmer of the dash lights to the new radio also? Thanks Ivan for all that you've done. Big Dog

Generally aftermarket radios, need the constant power for memory and a power wire that is keyed up when the ignition is on, is that what you have? I'll find you the points to hook those up to and I'll tell you where to hook the dimmer up to. Are those the only wires that need attention?

Customer replied1212 days and 7 hours ago.

I think that is it. The illumination wire must be for back lighting and the keyed switched wire must be for the power. The other wires coming out of the new radio plug are amp,Ant. which I think is only for a powered ant.,CCD which is for a back up camera not being used because we already have a back up camera, and k2 which I think is the other wire from the amp.All the others are for speakers and then a second plug for video in and outand audio in and out. I would like you to perform a test for me. Use a volt meter or test light. Turn your ignition key to accessory and test the fuses in the left and right fuse boxes. If you find a fuse with power, turn the key off and see if it goes away. Do this and let me know the labels and location of the fuses that have power when the key is on accessory and no power when you turn the key off. I know where you will get constant power, I want to guide you to accessory power.
