2001 Chevy Venture: accelerating..the spark plugs..trans..fuel filter

Resolved Question:

My 2001 Chevy Venture with 174000 miles on it surges when it shifts into overdrive lockup at about 55 m.p.h., this is accelerating at a normal rate and not being aggressive, if I step down on the gas and get it to downshift it smooth's out. I have replaced the spark plugs and plug wires and had the trans flushed and filter changed, also had the fuel filter changed. Otherwise the engine seems to be in good shape and does not use oil.
Hope you can help me out as I can't afford to trade yet.

Welcome Don. Is the check engine light on at all? What was the colour of the transmission fluid before you flushed it?

Customer: replied 7 years ago.

The check engine light was not on.

Transmission fluid was normal looking and did not smell burnt.

OK, the surging like you have could be a bad torque converter that is slipping, it could also be a failing pressure control solenoid which is very common on these. This solenoid if it is the cause is behind the side cover of the transmission side cover and requires removing the transmission part of the way to remove the cover to replace the solenoid.
