I have a serious coolant leak on a 1997 chevy c1500 5.7
the water is comming out from behind the a/c bracket and I cannot see exactly where it is

These have a common problem in that area it is usually the corner of the intake gasket leaking and running down, but to be sure sometimes you need to do a little tear down to see the area better.

thank you, XXXXX XXXXX assuming that this would also explain why I smelled anti-freeze with no visible sign of leaking in the past, could it possibly be a head gasket as well? or are there any other potential leaking points in this area

Yes you would get a smell for sure, as for it being a head gasket yes it could be but a leak there is not a common problem.
