2002 Chevy: My low fuel light..sluggish..half a mile..gas station

Customer Question

My low fuel light was on in my 2002 Chevy Silverado. My son accidentally filled it with unleaded gas and now it is sluggish and smoking. It has only been run about half a mile from the gas station to home.
What should I do???

Welcome. what is the engine size?
Customer: replied 7 years ago.
6.6L Duramax diesel
Expert:  GM Tech (Cam) replied 7 years ago.
Ok, these are not bad to work with. You will need to drain all the gas out, change the fuel filter and flush the lines, but then you simply need to prime the system and you are good to go. These stand up very well to gas in the system. I have never seen any damage in the Duramax as a result of gas, now water, that is a different story.

Thanks. I'm pretty handy with a wrench, do you think I can do this at home or should I have it towed to my local mechanic?

Expert:  GM Tech (Cam) replied 7 years ago.
You can do this easily. Most use a hose to syphon the tank out. Just be sure you have a place for all the fuel.
Customer: replied 7 years ago.
The fuel filters no problem. Not sure as to flusing the lines and priming the system.

Then you get the fuel tank empty, and put clean fuel in, take the filter off. Out a pail under the housing and start pumping the plunger till the proper fuel comes out. Then replace the filter, open the bleed screw on the top, pump again until fuel comes out. Close the screw and pump until it get stiff. Then start the engine.

I didn't see this email before I posted my last question.

Customer: replied 7 years ago.
Sorry. It cranks but won't start. I primed the system just as you recommended and still nothing.
