Welcome. Lets start with the basics. Does reverse work? What is the colour and condition of the fluid? Is the check engine light on?

it has reverse and ive changed the fluid and filter.i replaced the modulator valve with no apparent improvement.it will hold 1 st gaer until 35 mph then free wheel.these trans dont have an external governor so im not sure where to go from here

OK, it sounds like you have an issue with the 2nd clutch. It is required for everything but first and reverse. This could be a valve body issue or something deeper. Either way, your transmission needs to come out.

so this means a rebuild of the clutches and the valve body and you dont think its a comp. control problem?

Because the check engine light is not on, I don't suspect the computer controlled end of it to be the issue. If you still have the filter, I would open it up and see what is caught in the felt. See if there is signs of clutch material or seals.
