I have a 1988 chevy S10 with a V6 ,4.

i have a 1988 chevy S10 with a V6 ,4.3 liter , fuel injected i will drive it for a while, then the check engine light goes on ,then it will shut off, if i let it sit for a while and let it cool then it will start up and go then it will do the same thing over

Hi david . thanks for the opportunity to help you. it sounds like a problem with the sensor inside the distributor. heat related . these sensors can fail when hot . its like a crank position sensor in later models. when diagnosing these problems a technition should check for ignition or spark at coil when the problem occurs.also checking for injector pulse. if no spark or pulse replace distributor with remanufactured. or replace hall effect sensor in distributor. a simple way to check is when problem occurs take off air filter cover . have someone crank engine while looking into throttle body with flashlight. do you see any fuel entering cone shaped area under injector?? if no fuel present check for injector pulse . if injector not pulsing replace distributor.

thank you i will be sure to replace that , . but before it shuts off it idles really high, then that ceck engine light will go on, then shortly after, it will go off. and die , then I have to sit for a while and let it cool,then it will start again , and go , It runs really good, when it is cold out but now ,the weather has been warming up ,and this has been oucuring more and more often. I don't know if this is true but people have told me it might be my fan clutch,or the heat tempeature sensor,or may be my throttle control sensor

Retrieving the code would be helpfull. replace the coolant temp sensor if you want . a worst would cause a rich condition black smoke out tail pipe. the tps {throttle position sensor] can cause some strange symtoms . fan clutch has no effect on engine running. fuel pump may be causing some problem . some proffesional diagnosis may save some money. see if you can get a code. flash code distributor is my answer for repair.
