Wheel Hub/Speed Sensor Replacement

Removal Procedure

Caution: Refer to Brake Dust Caution in the Preface section.

Caution: Refer to ABS Component Handling Caution in the Preface section.

Important: The wheel hub and speed sensor are serviced as an assembly. The are not service as individual items.


    Object Number:(NNN) NNN-NNNN Size: SH

  1. Raise the vehicle.
  2. Remove the front brake caliper. Object Number:(NNN) NNN-NNNN Size: SH

  3. Remove the antilock brake system (ABS) speed sensor wiring harness from the upper control arm.
    Object Number:(NNN) NNN-NNNN Size: SH

  4. Remove the front retaining bolt for the speed sensor bracket at the upper control arm.
    Object Number:(NNN) NNN-NNNN Size: SH

  5. Remove the speed senor bracket from the upper control arm.
    Object Number:(NNN) NNN-NNNN Size: SH

    Important: Mark the holes used to mount the speed sensor electrical connector before removing. This will ensure the proper location of the speed sensor electrical connector for installation.

  6. Remove the speed sensor electrical connector from the body .
    Object Number:(NNN) NNN-NNNN Size: SH

    Important: The following service procedure is to ensure that the speed sensor wiring harness is properly positioned so that the length of the wiring harness is correct for installation. Failure to do so could cause damage to the speed sensor wiring harness.

  7. Using white or bright colored paint, mark the location of the speed sensor wiring harness to the steering knuckle.

  8. To ensure the ease of removal, bundle speed sensor wiring harness so not to have it entangled in any of the suspension components.

    Important: The following service procedure applies to those vehicles that are equipped withXXXXXONLY.

  9. Remove the steering knuckle assembly.
  10. Steering Knuckle Replacement (4WD, 2WD Z71)

    Tools Required

    J-42188-B Ball Joint Separator
    J 43631 Ball Joint Remover
    1. Support the lower control arm.
    2. Remove the wheel drive shaft nut. Discard the nut.
    3. Remove the brake caliper bracket. Disconnect the wheel speed sensor harness from the chassis harness.
    4. Disconnect the wheel speed sensor harness from inner fender panel.
    5. Disconnect the outer tie rod from the steering knuckle.Object Number:(NNN) NNN-NNNN Size: SH

    6. Remove the upper control arm retaining nuts from the ball joint studs.
    7. Remove the lower control arm retaining nut.
    8. Separate the lower ball joint from the steering knuckle using the J 43631 .

    9. Remove the steering knuckle assembly from the vehicle and set on a bench.
    10. Remove the ball joint using the J-42188-B .

  11. Remove the mounting bolts for the wheel bearing/hub, brake rotor assembly.
    Object Number:(NNN) NNN-NNNN Size: SH

  12. Remove the wheel bearing/hub, brake rotor assembly from the steering knuckle.
    Object Number:(NNN) NNN-NNNN Size: SH

    Important: Perform the following service procedure with the brake rotor on a flat surface.

  13. Remove the mounting bolt from the wheel bearing/hub, to the brake rotor.
    Object Number:(NNN) NNN-NNNN Size: SH

    Important: The splash shield will come off the steering knuckle when the wheel bearing/hub, brake rotor is removed.

  14. Remove the wheel bearing/hub from the brake rotor.
  15. Clean the contact area between the wheel bearing/hub and the brake rotor.
