How do I replace a broken parking brake cable on a 2000 Silverado.

How do I replace a broken parking brake cable on a 2000 Silverado. Is the parking brake made up of several sections of cable?

There are four separate cables in the park brake system. There is a front cable, an intermediate(middle) cable, and 2 rear cables (1 left and 1 right).

 

Parking Brake Front Cable Replacement

Removal Procedure

  1. Release the parking brake.
  2. Remove the park brake lever.
  3. Object Number: 376010  Size: SH

  4. Roll the carpet back to access cable grommet.
  5. Raise and support the vehicle. Object Number: 363830  Size: SH

  6. Disengage the grommet and the cable from the floor pan.
  7. Disconnect the front cable from the intermediate cable.
  8. Remove the cable from the body mount by depressing the retaining tabs.
  9. Remove the cable.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 363830  Size: SH

  1. Install the cable.
  2. Snap the retainer tabs into the body mount.
  3. Connect the front cable to the intermediate cable.
  4. Route the cable in through the floor pan and engage the grommet.
  5. Remove the safety stands.
  6. Lower the vehicle.

  7. Roll the carpet into place.
  8. Install the park brake lever. .
  9. Adjust the park brake system.

Parking Brake Intermediate Cable Replacement (Pickup)

Removal Procedure

  1. Release the parking brake.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle. Object Number: 493216  Size: SH

  3. Remove the nut from the threaded end of the intermediate cable.
    Object Number: 363847  Size: SH

  4. Disconnect the equalizer from the rear park brake cables.
    Object Number: 363830  Size: SH

  5. Disconnect the intermediate cable from the front cable.
  6. Remove the intermediate cable.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the intermediate cable.
    Object Number: 363830  Size: SH

  2. Connect the intermediate cable to the front cable.
    Object Number: 363847  Size: SH

  3. Connect the equalizer to the rear park brake cables. Object Number: 493216  Size: SH
  4. Install the nut to the threaded end of the intermediate cable.

    Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 3.5 N·m (31 lb in).

  5. Remove the safety stands.
  6. Lower the vehicle.
  7. Adjust the park brake system.

Parking Brake Rear Cable Replacement - Left Side (Pickup)

Removal Procedure

  1. Release the parking brake.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle. Object Number: 493216  Size: SH

  3. Relieve the tension on the park brake cables by loosening the nut at the equalizer.

  4. Disconnect the cable at the equalizer.
    Object Number: 363839  Size: SH

  5. Remove the cable from the mounting bracket by depressing the locking tabs (standard cab).

  6. Remove the cable from the body mount by depressing the locking tabs (extended cab).

  7. Remove the cable at the shock absorber bracket by removing the bolt.

  8. Remove the cable from the lever.
  9. Remove the cable from the backing plate by depressing the locking tabs.
  10. Remove the cable.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 555945  Size: SH

  1. Install the cable taking care to correctly route the cable through the guides and the body mounts.
  2. Install the cable to the backing plate by pressing the cable into place until locking tabs snap into place.
  3. Install the cable to the lever.

  4. Install the cable at the shock absorber bracket and install the bolt.

    Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  5. Install the cable to the mounting bracket until the locking tabs snap into place (standard cab).

  6. Install the cable to the body mount until the locking tabs snap into place (extended cab).

  7. Connect cable end to the equalizer.
    Object Number: 493216  Size: SH

  8. Tighten the nut to the intermediate cable at the equalizer.

    Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 3.5 N·m (31 lb in).

  9. Remove the safety stands.
  10. Lower the vehicle.
  11. Adjust the park brake cable.
