My 1997 Chevy Lumina reports an error code PO440 . I have purchased a new gas cap to start but I have also seen Evaporative Emissions Canister Vent Solenoid mentioned as a common cause. Is this something else which is easy to locate and replace?
Optional Information: 1997 Chevrolet Lumina 3.1L Already Tried: Cleared the code with OBD tool. Bought a gas cap at the dealer today, I read that aftermarket caps may not work. But also found that the Solenoid was a common problem. The car is driven mostly short trips by my daughter for college. I bought it used 3 years ago so don't know the full history. Currently she has switched to mid grade gas due to engine knock but the car gets 23 MPG. Not bad for an older car with over 100k on the odo.
WelcomeCustomer Code P0440 is simply Evap system performance. 99% of the time it is from the gas cap being loose. The Solenoid causes a P0442, a P0446, and a P0455. Try the cap. Also check the vacuum hoses on the back side of the engine and make sure they are properly installed. Please ask if you need more assistance.
