Ok,pull #1 spark plug & rotate the engine over (by hand, breaker bar on crank) till you get the #1 piston at top dead center.Look at the balancer on the crankshaft & see if it aligns with the mark on the timing cover. Also you can test the compression of any two cylinders of your choice & if you do not have 150 lbs or better, there is mechanical problems.

should the rotor cap inthe distributor be on #1 plug also
Expert:  John replied 8 years ago.
Yes,it should align up with #1 cylinder. You can also look at the slack in the chain,by using a breaker bar to move crankshaft & watch the distributor rotor. There should be a little for a 200,000 mile engine, but not a bunch.Think of the breaker on the crank as a dial on a 360 degrees scale.5 degrees is ok 10 degrees or more it too much.

what else should be checked if all this is ok i do not wont to tear into the engine if their is something else that can be eassley fixed causeing it not to start.
Expert:  John replied 8 years ago.
Check to see if you are getting spark to the plugs when the engine is cranking.Check the fuel pressure(50 -60 psi for port injection & 10 -16 psi for throttle body). All pressures should for 4 minutes.Scan computer system for failure codes & data from sensors.

i had sent you info stating that i had checked for fule and spark.
Expert:  John replied 8 years ago.
Ok,have you scanned the computer system ?
Customer: replied 8 years ago.
no i do not have that kind of tools.
Expert:  John replied 8 years ago.
To diagnose this problem a scan tool & the knowledge is needed.Check & see if you have injector pulse at the injectors.Check to see if the vehicle will fire off on carb spray or ether.
