2001 GMC safari: Rear axle developed groan/ whine noise..pronounced

Customer Question

I have 2001 GMC safari. Rear axle developed groan/ whine noise . It is most pronounced when taking off from a stop or coming to one. The noise is constant at all speeds, tires OK, in all gears including nuetral. Any common problems with this?

Sounds very much like you have a pinion bearing in the rear differential that has gone bad. If you can get the truck in the air and run it, you should be able to pick up the area the noise is coming from with a stethoscope while the rear axles are turning. Not a real often problem, but common enough. To repair will require removal of the gear set in the rear end and replacement of the inner and outer pinion bearing, crush sleeve and seals. This job really needs the help of a professional because of all of the critical adjustments that are involved. The noise is not an immediate danger and will continue to get worse until repaired. Thanks
