How do I replace the battery in a 2004 Impala

Hello signal10,

I am sending you instructions right out of the GM service manual for your car. Be sure the radio is turned off before unhooking the battery as we don't want it going into the theft lock up mode. See below. Thanks, Bob

Battery Replacement

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the RH fender diagonal brace.
    Object Number: 289316  Size: SH

  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Disconnect the positive battery cable.
    Object Number: 513047  Size: SH

  4. Remove the battery hold down retainer bolt (1).
  5. Remove the battery hold down retainer (2).

    Important: Do NOT tip the battery more than 40 degrees during removal.

  6. Remove the battery (3).
    Object Number: 201375  Size: SH

  7. Remove the battery insulator from the battery.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the battery insulator to the battery.
    Object Number: 513047  Size: SH

    Important: Do NOT tip the battery more than 40 degrees during removal.

  2. Install the battery (3) to the battery tray.
  3. Install the battery hold down retainer (2).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Install the battery hold down retainer bolt (1).

    Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 18 N·m (13 lb ft).

  5. Connect the positive battery cable.

    Tighten
    Tighten the terminal bolt to 15N·m (11 lb ft).

  6. Connect the negative battery cable.
  7. Install the RH fender diagonal brace.
