GM dealers use a special engine support fixture to hold the motor up while doing this job. See if this helps you at all. I don't know if you can get enough clearance with out the special tool.

  1. Disconnect the battery ground (negative) cable.
  2. Remove the engine mount struts from the engine.
  3. Remove the A/C compressor mounting bolts and set the compressor aside.
  4. Install the engine support fixture.
  5. Raise and support the vehicle.
  6. Disconnect the catalytic converter pipe from the engine right side exhaust manifold.
  7. Drain the engine oil.
    Object Number: 54406 Size: SH

  8. Remove the oil level sensor wiring harness connection.
  9. Remove the starter motor.
  10. Remove the transaxle brace from the oil pan.
  11. Remove the transaxle mount lower nuts.
  12. Remove the engine mount lower nuts.
  13. Raise the engine using the engine support fixture in order to gain access for oil pan removal.
  14. Remove the engine mount bracket with the engine mount from the oil pan.

Important remove the engine right side oil pan side bolts.

  15. Remove the oil pan and the oil pan gasket. Refer to Oil Pan Removal .
  16. Clean the oil pan and the engine block gasket surface. Refer to Oil Pan Clean and Inspect .
