How do you replace the power steering pump on a 1987 chevy celebrity?

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Gasoline Engines


See Figures 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5




  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.



  2. Remove the hoses at the pump and tape the openings shut to prevent contamination. Position the disconnected lines in a raised position to prevent leakage.



  3. Remove the pump belt.

  1. On some 4-cylinder models it may be necessary to:




    1. Remove the radiator hose clamp bolt.



    2. Remove the right side fender splash shield.



  2. On 2.8L models:




    1. Remove the air cleaner assembly.



    2. Disconnect the electrical connector at the blower motor.



    3. Drain the cooling system, then remove the heater hose at the water pump.



  3. On 3.0L models, remove the alternator.


Removing a component such as the alternator may make the job easier on any model.




  1. Loosen the retaining bolts and any braces, then remove the pump.

  1. Remove the pump pulley and attach it to the new pump, as illustrated.


To install:




  1. Install the pump and brackets to the engine and hand-tighten the retaining bolts.

  1. On 3.0L models:




    1. Install the alternator support to the engine.



    2. Position the alternator adjustment bracket over the front pump adjustment bracket.



    3. Install the long bolt and alternator bracket, front pump bracket, rear pump bracket, and alternator support to the engine.



    4. Attach the remaining alternator adjustment bracket bolt.



    5. Install the power steering pump belt.



    6. Raise the car, then install the rear pump adjustment bracket-to-pump nut.



  2. Connect and tighten the hose fittings.



  3. On 3.0L models, lower the vehicle, then install the alternator and belt.



  4. On some 4-cylinder models, you will need to install the radiator hose clamp bolt.



  5. On 2.8L models:




    1. Connect the water hose to the water pump.



    2. Install and connect the blower motor.



  6. Refill the pump with fluid and bleed the system.



  7. Install the pump belt and adjust the tension.



  8. On 3.0L models, install the air cleaner assembly.



  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
