Hi and thanks for using JustAnswer.

What make and model phone are you using?

Customer: replied 4 years ago.
Samsung Galaxy S

Are you using the Stock messaging app? Or have you downloaded another one like Handcent, etc.?

i am using the one that comes with the phone, not sure which that one is

Ok no problem, follow these steps and it should resolve your issue.

I made a video you can watch here( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IOaFbSMCGYE ) or you can use the written steps below:

  1. Go to your Settings by either opening the Settings app, or going to your home screen > pressing the menu button on the phone > choose settings.
  2. Choose Applications
  3. Choose Manage Applications
  4. Tap on the 'All' tab at the top
  5. Locate and tap on the 'Messager' app
  6. Tap on the Clear Data button
  7. Pull the battery from the phone and then replace it and reboot it.

If that doesn't resolve it, there could be a more serious issue. Download a free messager (sms/mms) app called "GO SMS Pro". During the setup just click OK, or Next, and keep the default settings. Use this app and see if you can send and receive texts. If you cant after trying both things, then please tell me as its a more serious issue.
