Hi I'm Dr. Carole and I'm sorry to hear about Ian. Did the vet put Ian on pred because he was losing weight? Were bloodwork, xrays and ultrasound done to try to understand why the weight was dropping? The diarrhea certainly can be a side effect of the pred, so if the cat is not doing well on it then it may need to be discontinued. The diarrhea can then be treated with some antidiarrheals and antibiotics (something like Metronidazole or Flagyl). Prednisone is a potent anti-inflammatory but sometimes it is used for certain cancers like lymphoma. I'm guessing your vet may have thought that the weight loss may be due to something like that. If you plan to stop the pred though you will need to wean off of it slowly, go from 5 mg a day to 2.5 mg a day and then 2.5 mg every other day over a period of a week. You never want to stop pred suddenly.
