My cat is quarantined now for 6 days and tonight she hides

Customer Question

My cat is quarantined now for 6 days and tonight she hides and is not eating her food. Cold this be a sign of rabbies? She was a stray that came to our house 7 months ago and she is strictly an outdoor cat. She was in a fight about3 months ago.

While there is a good chance that the signs she is showing are from the stress of confinement,

you should call the ER tomorrow and tell them of the signs.

They will probably want her tested for rabies to see if she has it.

If she is negative you will have to quarantine her for 4 more days.

I know that this must be very stressful for you but it is better to be careful and safe.

Was a rabies test done on her 6 days ago?

Expert:  Dr Marta Lepes replied 3 months ago.

I would be interested to know what state you are in because most states require a quarantine of 6 months.

Also most rabid cats that bite people will show signs within 3 days.

Here are the most common signs of rabies to be aware of:

Growling, aggression

Tremors, howling, HIDING,

Seizures

Rabies virus affects the brain first then later the rest of the body.

Please be safe and notify your ER.

I've been doing some research on rabies. I live in Hawaii where we do not have the disease and we do not vaccinate unless the animal is going to an area where there is rabies present.

The 10 day quarantine was to see if your kitty developed signs that would make the ER/your doctor start a series of rabies vaccinations on you.

Sometimes if the bite is from an unknown cat a gama-globulin shot is given to the person near to where the bite occurred.

And here is more information on signs in animals: over 75% develop the aggressive form.

The other 25% have a very broad range of behavior.

Once again I urge you to let your doctor and vet know of her change in behavior.
