Customer Question

Nothing - I'm looking for information/documentation of problems with aluminum foil in kittens/cats. A woman is telling people to make balls of aluminum foil for kittens/cats to play with. I said it's potentially dangerous if they start chewing on them and swallowing pieces of the foil (obstruction/mechanical injury). She got very nasty - doesn't believe cats will chew on the foil and continues to recommend people to use this for toys. Problem is she runs an animal rescue, so she has a large audience. I want to be able to provide documented evidence that this could be a problem. I can't seem to find the article(s) I had on foil and ingestion. If there is ANY possibility you can provide at least one good, solid article/reference, I would sooooo appreciate it! Trying to prevent a large number of foreign body ingestions. ***@******.***
JA: I'm sorry to hear that. The Veterinarian will know if the kitten will be able to digest that. What is the kitten's name?
JA: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about P.OST.?

So I have not been able to find any documentation that shows that playing with an aluminum ball is an issue with toxicity. I will opt out so that another expert may be able to help you. take care

Hi there,

I'mCustomerand I would be glad to help with your question. Aluminum foil is not toxic to cats if ingested but you are correct that it does pose a large risk for causing gastritis, enteritis and possibly causes a gastric foreign body or small intestinal obstruction. Unfortunately, I cannot find any scholarly articles or case studies on the subject. I did find a number of websites from reliable sources such as Tufts and one veterinary text reference from Clinical Medicine of the Dog and Cat, Second Edition that mention the risk:

Here are other websites that mention risks of aluminum foil to cats and dogs:
