My cat suddenly began hanging her tongue out and drooling. She also seems to have difficulty eating.

How old is your cat, please? Her behavior would appear to result from oral pain - stomatitis (a general inflammation in the oral cavity), dental disease (resorptive lesions - similar to cavities but a different disease process; tooth root abscess), ulcers, wounds, or neoplasia (cancer) in the oral cavity.
