Our little cat (10 yrs old) has a tendency to throw up

Customer Question

Our little cat (10 yrs old) has a tendency to throw up randomly. Sometimes it is whole food, sometimes it is watery. This has been been going on for a a few years. She can go weeks without doing this, then will start doing it on more regular basis. Now our 2nd cat is doing the same thing. This is random and go on for a couple days, then quit for weeks. We do not have any plants in the house that they eat, and they are indoor cats only.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) - a common idiopathic (unknown cause) infiltration of the small and/or large intestine with inflammatory cells - is most commonly diagnosed in cats such as yours. A food intolerance may accompany IBD but isn't necessarily present. The diagnosis of IBD is confirmed by scoping and biopsy of the GI tract but a presumptive diagnosis can be made if my patient responds to an antiinflammatory glucocorticosteroid such as prednisolone, the antiinflammatory antibiotic metronidazole, or both.

Your cats' vet may recommend a gastrointestinal diagnostic profile of blood and urine tests in an attempt to rule out other differential diagnoses prior to presumptive therapy. An abdominal ultrasound can be very valuable as it's the most sensitive and readily available imaging technique for assessing the gastrointestinal tract. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
