Hi there, This is Dr. Gabby.

Is Emalina scratching at her ears?

Are the crusts on the inside or outside of the ears?

Does she go outside?

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
The crust is around the rim only but inside and out. It appears that it is falling off. She doesn't appear to be scratching a lot. No she is an inside cat.

Ok thank you,

That sounds like it could be an immune system issue or inflammation of the lining of the blood vessels at the tips of the ears which is called vasculitis.

Is she still on prednisone? When did the crusting start?

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
No. I just noticed it 4 days ago. On the outside of her ears it more than the inside.

Ok if she went outside or were exposed to any mosquitos or insects I would say it could be related to that because that is where insects like to bite and if the cat is allergic to insect saliva they will have crusting and hair loss.

Since she never goes outside, and she was just on prednisone, I think it could be her immune system going haywire and attacking the skin cells on her ears or vasculitis with the inflammaiton of the lining of the blood vessels on the tips of her ears.

So you can try rubbing hydrocortisone cream, the over the counter kind, on the affected areas 2-3 times a day. If there is no improvement in 48 hours she will need to see the vet.

Does that help? Do you have any additional questions?
