My one year old cat had her right back leg amputated almost

Customer Question

My one year old cat had her right back leg amputated almost a month ago. She now does these flips and flopping moves and will climb all over you while she does this. She is growling and meowing while she does this. Or she will start digging and clawing at my bed. Is this a side effect from the surgery

Hello & welcome, I am Dr. B, a licensed veterinarian and I would like to help you with your wee one today.

In regards ***** ***** question, these are not typical behaviors post-surgery for our amputee kitties. Especially not a month afterwards. Therefore, if she does this often, I' d be concerned that she may have nerve pain associated with the amputated leg (akin to phan***** *****mb pain in people). Therefore, we'd want to have a recheck with her vet and discussion about either a short term course of anti-inflammatories (to reduce any nerve or associated inflammation) or at least the option for you to have a cat safe pain relief on hand at home to use when she shows these episodes. We would hope that between these options we can manage her discomfort and reduce these episodes for her.

Please take care,

Dr. B.
