Customer Question

Dennis, you've described an abdominal effusion - a collection of fluid in the abdominal cavity. Right-sided heart failure, decreased level of albumin (a small protein) in the blood due to a failing liver unable to produce enough albumin or albumin loss through failing kidneys or through the gastrointestinal tract, and inflammation due to infection or neoplasia (cancer) in the abdominal cavity are all important differential diagnoses. The prognosis for these cats must always be very guarded to grave; the finding of an effusion always indicates advanced disease. Lucy's vet will want to thoroughly examine Lucy including diagnostics in the form of blood and urine tests as well as an analysis of a small amount of the fluid needle aspirated from Lucy's abdomen. You should know within 24 hours if Luch can be helped.
