Customer Question

My mainecoon cat has been vomiting regurgitated food today, then all the sudden, his vomit was thin and looked slightly red. I am worried he may have eaten something off the floor that hurt his stomach.

In most cases the hematemesis (blood in the vomitus) you're seeing arises secondary to ruptured capillaries in the stomach lining which occurs with forceful vomiting. Unless Percy's vomiting stops unaided within the next two hours, a vet should inject him with both an antiemetic and antacid. Dosing these patients orally isn't appropriate and he should also be fasted for 12 hours in order to rest his gastrointestinal tract. Leave water down for him to drink but if drinking induces more vomiting, ice cubes for him to lick should replace his water. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
