Customer Question

My cat was hurt last night not sure if it's snake bite or if he hurt his leg in the woodpile. Gave him 50 mg Tramadol for pain. He is awake this morning and tried to eat and drink water, but threw it back up. Is 50 mg to strong and how often can I give it to him.

Malinda, at present there's no clear dosage for tramadol in cats based upon prospective studies. Most current recommendations for dosing are 0.5 - 1 mg/lb twice daily. Some suggest that some cats may only need once daily doses; others suggest going as high as 2 mg/lb. Tramadol has an unpleasant taste and dose avoidance may be an issue. Neurologic and opioid adverse effects can be seen, particularly at dosages higher than 1 mg/lb. 50 mg is surely an overdose for the average sized cat. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
