My cat has been vomiting and has diahrea. She has vomited much

Customer Question

My cat has been vomiting and has diahrea. She has vomited much through out her life. She is 14. She was drinking fine. Went to the vet yesterday and her blood work and urine checked out perfect. They gave me medication and different food. She ate the food right away. This morning she is listless. Threw up the food and not drinking

Hello. Thanks for the question. It sounds like your cat may be a chronic IBD (inflammatory bowel disease) cat. This can lead to intermittent vomiting and diarrhea throughout life. Most will resolve on their own over a few days. Sometimes they do require treatment with antibiotics (Metronidazole) and GI protectants (Pepcid/ Famotidine). The more severe cats will also require lifelong treatment with steroids (Prednisolone). For now, I would try some over the counter antacids- Pepcid. You can give 5 mg 1-2 times daily. I would also try to give some canned pumpkin or sweet potato baby food- 1 teaspoon 2-3 times daily. That will help with the diarrhea. A probiotic like Fortiflora can also be of benefit. This would be obtained from your vet. Some fluids under the skin (SubQ) would also help for any dehydration. Here's a nice link on IBD in cats with more info: I hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.
