Hello & welcome, I am Dr. B, a licensed veterinarian and I would like to help you with your wee one today.

Now I have to say that steroids are not advisable for cats with calicivirus. They do reduce inflammation but actually dampen the immune system such that the virus often causes more issue for our suffering cats. Therefore, I would highly advise speaking to your vet about weaning Kimmy off the steroids immediately. Instead, we tend to manage these cats with Metacam (a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory) to reduce inflammation +/- antiviral treatment (ie interferon). As well, if Kimmy's calicivirus is causing gingivitis (it can also cause flu signs, lameness, and oral ulcers), then we may also need your vet to use an antibiotic (ie Antirobe as well). Furthermore, there have been some reports noting that cats with this virus benefit from being on a high meat diet while avoiding dry food (as carbohydrates can be pro-inflammatories and worsen these situations). Finally, in cats with refractory cases, we do sometimes find that full mouth dental extractions. Still, overall, steroids are not advisable in calicivirus infections and should be used for wee Kimmy.

Please take care,

Dr. B.
