Customer Question

My cat has diabetes. She is 15 years old and has had 2 severe hypoglycemic episodes. I need to have her groomed but she has to be sedated. To sedate she needs to be fasted. I am of the opinion that I should reduce or eliminate her insulin intake if she cant have the high carb dry food she normally eats. I am I right in my thinking?

thank you

When we are planning on sedating or anesthetizing a diabetic pet, in addition to fasting them, we also recommend giving a lower dose of insulin - typically we recommend giving 1/2 the normal dose the morning of the procedure. So for example, if a cat normally gets 4 units, we recommend giving 2 units of insulin the morning of the procedure.

ok. Thank you. That helps.

So, yes, you are correct in your thinking.

Then, when she gets home after the procedure, we would recommend letting her eat normally, then if she does eat a normal amount, give her regular dose of insulin at night (if she is getting insulin twice daily).
