Hi. Welcome to Just Answer. My name is***** and I've been a veterinarian for 15 years. Tapeworms are typically found by owners finding rice like segments on their pet's stool or fur around their rectum. These are typically not a big health issue for the cat or dog. They typically get them from eating a flea that has the intermediate life stage of the tapeworm in them. A single treatment with a product that has praziquantel in it gets rid of the tapeworms in the intestinal tract. The key to prevent re-infestation is good flea control. If more fleas with the intermediate stage are eaten, then the cycle begins again.
