My 19 year old female cat has a UTI. She is leaking urine

Customer Question

My 19 year old female cat has a UTI. She is leaking urine and has been in and out of the liter box for 3 hrs. My vet is closed until Monday. What can I do for her until I can get her to the vet?

Hi, I can help you with your question today.

Unfortunately, there isn't much we can do to help keep her comfortable until then - there are no appropriate over the counter pain medications for cats, and they cannot take phenazopyridine.

Aside from that, the best thing you can do is make sure that she is drinking as much as possible.

Stretching the bladder wall releases anti-inflammatory mediators which could help make her feel better.

To encourage drinking, offer dilute chicken broth or water from a tuna can.

Also, monitor her closely to make sure that she is indeed continuing to urinate. It is uncommon to see urinary obstructions in female cats, but if she has a stone, it is possible to block her urethra. That would be an absolute emergency.
